Addressing the challenges to fuel hard-to-abate transport sectors with greener alternatives is critical for the energy transition. Although transport accounts for 20% of total energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, the renewable energy share in the sector is only 4% and not expanding at the necessary pace.[1] Transport activity is projected to nearly double by 2050, rising 1.8 times for passenger transport and 2.0 times for freight transport compared to 2019 levels. Without more ambitious policies, transport CO2 emissions could grow 16-50% by 2050.[2]

This session will bring together stakeholders from governments, NGOs, academia, and industry to provide a global perspective on the pathways to achieving sustainable transport with renewable fuels. Through interactive dialogues, policy experts, as well as representatives from the renewables and transport landscape will examine the benefits and challenges of cutting transport emissions, including the necessary enabling technologies and infrastructure at different levels of the supply chain. The discussion will highlight financing perspectives and underscore the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving a fossil-free future for the heavy-duty transport sector.
