Burkhard JUNG was born in Siegen/Westphalia in 1958,
After qualifying as a teacher of German and Protestant Theology he initially taught in Münster and Siegen.

After German reunification, he established and directed the Evangelisches Schulzentrum Leipzig (Leipzig Protestant educational centre) in 1991
In 1999 he was elected Deputy Mayor for Youth, Education and Sports, and in 2001 Deputy Mayor for Youth, Social Affairs, Health and Education From 2001 to 2003 he was responsible for Leipzig’s bids for the Olympics and the Football World Cup.

In February 2006 he was elected directly by the citizen of Leipzig as Mayor of Leipzig In 2013 he was re-elected directly for a second period of office as Mayor of Leipzig In 2020 he was re-elected directly for a third period of office as Mayor of Leipzig.

In June 2023, he was elected as President of EUROCITIES
