Kanzo Nakai is appointed Director, Transport Sector Office (SD1-TRA), Sectors Department (SD) effective 30 June 2023.

Mr. Nakai, a national of Japan, holds master’s degrees in international development policy from Duke University, United States and in Economics from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. He holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Kyoto University, Japan.

Kanzo has 31 years of professional experience including 11 years in ADB. He joined ADB in July 2011 as Senior Transport Specialist in URM. He transferred to SPOD as Senior Planning and Policy Specialist in July 2014 and then to SATC as Senior Transport Specialist in May 2016. He was promoted to Principal Transport Specialist in March 2019. He assumed the Officer-in-Charge role in SATC in June 2022 and successfully obtained full board commitment and approval of large-scale transport projects for India, along with PCP and loan processing of other projects.

Prior to joining ADB, he was Director, South Asia Division in the Japan International Cooperation Agency and Director, Development Assistance Division in the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. He also worked for Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the Government of Japan, to handle urban problems.
