Patrick Schnieder was appointed Federal Minister of Transport on 6 May 2025. He has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 2009, serving on several of its committees, including the Transport and Digital Infrastructure Committee. Schnieder was Chief Whip of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group from 2018 until 2025. During this period, he also chaired the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the BENELUX countries from 2018 to 2021 and the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with Belgium and Luxembourg from 2022 to 2025, having previously served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg from 2014 to 2017. In 2011, Schnieder was appointed Secretary-General of the CDU in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a position he held until 2018.
Prior to his election to the Bundestag, Patrick Schnieder served as mayor of the municipal association of Arzfeld for 10 years from his initial election into office in 1999. Born in the city of Kyllburg in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Schnieder studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn. After completing his practical legal training and successfully passing his second state examination in 1997, he practised as a lawyer before entering public service.
