Air pollution remains a pressing global health crisis, with particulate matter (PM) posing significant risks to human health and the environment. In urban areas, non-exhaust emissions from road transport—comprising brake, tyre, and road wear particles—now dominate PM pollution.
In this discussion round, speakers will reflect on the sources, impacts, and mitigation strategies for NEEs. With the European Union’s Euro 7 regulation setting emission limits for brake wear and tyre wear, this timely discussion will tackle pressing questions around the impact of new powertrain on NEEs, as well as the need for innovations to further reduce brake, tyre, and road wear particle emissions.
Using insights from a Cost-Benefit Analysis simulated in the case of London, as well as sectoral expertise, panellists will reflect upon the public interventions required to mitigate the harmful effects of NEEs on air quality, public health, and the environment. The question of collaboration at international level to establish monitoring protocols for NEEs will also be addressed.
This panel discussion will coincide with the launch of a new study, conducted by e:misia for EIT Urban Mobility, Transport for London (TfL), and the Greater London Authority (GLA).
