Resilience in transport refers to the transport system’s capacity to deal with, adapt to and recover from disruptions. Many factors of inequalities interact to influence individual mobility experiences.
Mobility practices are known to be gendered: women’s daily routines and associated mobility patterns are different from those of men, and consequently, the impact of extreme events that disrupt daily routines is necessarily gendered. Not only may critical events have gendered impacts, they may also reinforce gender differences that pre-existed the crisis. A systematic incorporation of resilience into transport policy and planning should then consider these differential impacts on users. Gender is a useful lens through which this can be explored, to embed a user focus in transport decision-making.
This interactive session will explore how making transport systems more inclusive and gender-responsive, along with increasing women’s representation in planning and leadership, can improve the sector’s ability to prepare for and manage disruptions, unlock economic opportunities, create decent jobs, and strengthen long-term system performance.
The session will also mark the launch of the joint ITF–FIA Foundation study on gender and transport resilience. It will bring together ITF stakeholders from government, international organisations, business, and academia – including those engaged in the ITF 2025 Annual Consultation on Gender and the newly launched Women in Transport Network.
Breakout groups will be moderated by the session speakers, as well as the following facilitators:
- Emiko Araki, Director of International Cooperation Office, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Japan
- Mario Tartaglia Leader of FS Research Centre, FS Italiane, Member ITF CPB
- Keisha Alena Mayuga, Advisor, Gender and Inclusivity, TUMI/ Women Mobilize Women
- Joo Hyun Ha, Sustainability Strategy and Climate Advocacy, UIC
- Heather Allen, Independent Consultant
- Philippe Crist, Senior Advisor, Innovation & Foresight, ITF
- Magdalena Olczak-Rancitelli, Senior Manager, ITF
