UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026 – 2035

In 2023, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first ever United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport to start in 2026. Through the General Assembly resolution A/78/148 titled “Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals” the Member States also requested the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to develop an Implementation Plan for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, in collaboration with the UN Regional Commissions and in consultation with Member States, the United Nations system and all other relevant stakeholders.

The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport will be an opportunity to highlight transport’s critical role in achieving sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals, rally existing and new actors behind a shared vision for more sustainable transport globally, foster and initiate new projects, initiatives and partnerships, and enhance coordination within the UN and across the transport sector.

The Implementation Plan of the UN Decade is expected to be launched on 26 November 2025 on World Sustainable Transport Day at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event will also celebrate the start of the UN Decade.

Key topics to be discussed at the Open Stage Café event include:

• In what ways can the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport boost our efforts towards more sustainable transport, taking into consideration all modes of transport, including inland transport, maritime transport and aviation, for both passenger and freight transport?
• What would a successful UN Decade of Sustainable Transport look like including in different regions?
• What roles can different actors play in contributing to the actions of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport?
