The Safe System approach is being used to maintain progress in saving lives in the countries with the safest roads and to achieve step changes in performance in places where rates of death and serious injury are high. It works by tackling all aspects of road use and design in concert.

Identifying what needs to change to reorient policy towards a safe system approach is not easy in practice. The ITF has therefore facilitated the development of a Safe System Tool as a means to guide countries, cities, companies or projects in improving road safety. This tool is meant to assess where they stand in their Safe System journey and help identify where to make changes in their road safety strategies. The potential to save lives is highest in low- and middle-income countries, so the tool has been designed in collaboration with policy makers and experts working on projects in a wide range of countries.

At this press event, Henk Stipdonk will explain the importance of the Safe System Approach and James Bradford will make a demonstration of the web-based Safe System tool.

The Safe System tool will be finalized later in 2024.
