Only 17% of transport workers are women. This waste of human talent hinders the sector from overcoming its skill shortages. It also undermines efforts to make transport more sustainable, innovative and inclusive. This study tackles this issue head-on: “Gender imbalance in the transport sector: a toolkit for change” identifies five key action areas and provides good practice examples on inclusive recruitment, retention and career development. It covers all transport modes. The work complements the more policy-focused ITF Gender Analysis Toolkit for Transport, launched at the last ITF Summit, to provide practical solutions to promote the role of women in the sector. Organised by POLIS, FIA Foundation and Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All)

Speakers:

  • Isobel Duxfield, POLIS, co-author of the report
  • Heather Allen, Consultant, co-author of the report

More than 1.35 million people are killed every year, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. Stopping this carnage requires flipping the traditional hierarchy in mobility and prioritise active and sustainable transport while making the system safer for all users. This report provides actionable guidance for public authorities (national & local) as well as practitioners, building on successful case studies. SuM4All is a global coalition of 56 international organisations and companies with a shared ambition to transform the future of transport and mobility.

The chronic shortage of professional truck, bus, coach and taxi drivers is accelerating. It impacts millions of workers, employers and services, from local school bus services to global supply chains. Enabling legal immigrants, especially qualified drivers, to work in the profession is one solution – but it is beset by practical and political challenges. This press briefing will outline a new global way forward on this important and sometimes controversial issue.

Speaker:

  • Umberto de Pretto, Secretary General International Road Transport Union
